You Are Not Defenseless.

There is a certain song that makes me cry every time I listen to it. Every time. It’s a song that has spoken so much to my heart, and the lyrics are so powerful. Powerful enough to give hope and to those without it.

The song is Rescue by Lauren Daigle. It’s a beautiful, slow ballad with emotional piano chords and strings that remind you that God never leaves you. I love every word in this song but there’s one line that gets me everytime.

It’s in the second verse, Lauren sings about how God transcends any distance, then she says:

“You’re not defenseless

It’s not the most poetic line in the song, but it’s so important. And it’s a reminder we all need.

We are not defenseless.

This is something I have to speak over my heart over and over. Because life is more than hard. Life is an endless ocean of problems and heartache and struggles. And sometimes we feel as if we are drowning as we get hit by wave after wave, problem after problem, heartache after heartache.

The constant struggle can cause us to get discouraged and tired. The next thing we know the ocean overtakes us, and we let it. We let it drives us away from the shores of hope.

Further, our circumstances distract us. They take us away. And we just float in the current. And that might be you right now. Floating, stuck in the current of insecurity. Of doubt. Of lack. Of anxiety. You’re on the brink of giving up, of letting the waves win. You don’t have the will to fight. You feel defenseless.

But you are not defenseless. I need you to understand that you are not defenseless.

You have a rock, a shield, a fortress. An ever-present help. You have a God. A mighty one. One that goes before you stands behind you and surrounds you.

He’s powerful, and the best thing is that He’s given you power too.

You are not defenseless. Not only because you have a Great Defender, but because He’s given you weapons of defense too.

Firstly, He’s given us The Word.

It’s alive, and it’s sharper than a two-edged sword. Speak it over your life, speak it over your situations. Read your Bible, hide its words in your heart, and use them against any adversity.

Second, (and the one I really want to focus on ) is Prayer.

Oh, friend, God has given you the authority in your words. He has given you access to the throne. There is power in your prayers.

We do not have to let waves of despair and discouragement sweep us away. We can fight, and push through. Prayer is how we do this, speaking to our situations, crying out to our God.

It is with prayer that we can defeat any problem, any feeling, any situation that the enemy tries to bring before us.

If you’re not quite convinced, I assure it’s written all over scripture:

Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray. Are any of you happy? You should sing praises. Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. 15Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven. Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

 James 5:13-17 (NLT)

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.

Philippians 4:6 (NLT)

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Hebrews 4:16 (NLT)

But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.

Matthew 6:6 (NLT)

And there are countless other scriptures and stories of prayer being our defense.

The next time you feel hopeless like you’re stuck, unprotected, or without cover. Raise your voice in prayer. Open your journal, get a pen and write it out. Go into a closet or a quiet space and pour out your heart before God.

This is how we fight. This is how we defend.
