It’s really no secret that college is the time of our lives when our bank accounts are the emptiest. Yet as girlies, we still desire to be put together, well-kept. And it can absolutely be done on a budget; there’s nothing wrong with that, because we love a financially responsible woman!
Hair
Maintaining our hair has to be the hardest thing to do out of everything. Personally, I believe it’s also the most important — I don’t want to do anything if my hair isn’t done.
Learning how to do your own hair is one of the best skills you can develop in college, and it all starts with the products you use. You don’t need a $40 shampoo to have healthy hair. Some of my favorite budget-friendly staples:
- Garnier Sleek & Shine — tames frizz without weighing hair down
- TRESemmé Heat Protectant — a non-negotiable before any heat styling
- Aussie Shampoo & Conditioner — smells amazing and actually works
- SheaMoisture — a holy grail for moisture, especially for textured hair
My favorite hairstyles are the ones that last. For my girls with 4a/4b/4c textured hair, twist-outs and braid-outs are your best friends: style once, wear all week. And if you get knotless braids, keeping them in for 6–8 weeks is one of the smartest ways to cut costs while protecting your hair.
Nails
If you’re a DIY girlie, investing in a nail system from Amazon or TikTok Shop is a game-changer. Gel kits have gotten so good that you can get salon-quality nails from your dorm room.
If you’re DIY-challenged like me — no shame — press-ons are the move. The key is the glue. A strong nail glue (I love the Olive & June glue!) makes press-ons last 2–3 weeks, which means you’re essentially getting a manicure for a few dollars. Budget queen behavior.
Brows
Your eyebrows frame your entire face. A well-shaped brow can make you look polished even on your laziest days. A few options depending on your budget:
- Waxing at a salon — look for student discounts or local spots that charge under $15. Once you find your shape, upkeep is minimal.
- Threading — often cheaper than waxing and incredibly precise.
- At-home brow maintenance — a spoolie, small scissors, and a pair of tweezers go a long way between appointments. Don’t overpluck — less is more.
- Brow products — the e.l.f. Brow pencil and NYX brow gel are drugstore staples that hold their own against luxury brands.
Skin
Your skin is the foundation of everything. A simple, consistent routine beats an expensive, complicated one every time.
- Cleanser, moisturizer, SPF — that’s it to start. CeraVe and Neutrogena are dermatologist-recommended and budget-friendly.
- Drink your water. It’s free, and it works.
- If you’re dealing with acne or uneven texture, benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid cleansers are affordable and effective.
Clothes & Style
Being well-dressed in college is less about how much you spend and more about how intentional you are.
- Thrifting is your best friend. Goodwill, ThredUp, Poshmark, Depop — you can find incredible pieces for almost nothing.
- Build a capsule wardrobe of basics (white tee, black jeans, a good blazer, clean sneakers) and rotate statement pieces around them.
- Take care of what you have — hand-wash delicates, steam instead of ironing, and store things properly. Clothes last longer when you treat them right.
Overall..
Being well-kept in college isn’t about spending the most money — it’s about being intentional with the money you do have. Prioritize the things that make you feel confident, invest in skills (like doing your own hair and nails), and remember: consistency and care go further than any luxury product ever could.
