Maintenance.

I know you’ve seen it. The maintenance videos. The girlies are getting their hair done, their nails done, their eyebrows, laser, waxes, filler, lymphatic drainage…

The list of beauty maintenance items goes on and on.

And we eat it up. I know I do. I love those videos. I love watching their hair appointments and seeing their nail color/designs. Don’t let them be about to go on a trip or vacation. Oh, I loveee those.

And we spend so much money on these things as girls. Every month. Some of us every two weeks!

We put so much effort into our appearances. It takes a lot of energy to sustain these routines. And yet, we’re so done up on the outside, and still feel so empty inside.

Hair is done, but we’re still lonely.

Nails are perfect, but we’re still anxious.

Eyebrows arched but secretly depressed. It took a lot for you to get out of bed this morning, and nobody knows you’re drowning in sadness, but your skin looks amazing because you just had that facial. So it doesn’t matter.

We do the most to maintain these bodies of ours, but our souls are left abandoned. Neglected.

We become self-sustaining and self-maintaining, yet can’t even do it correctly. Because we often forget to maintain and sustain what truly matters.

And the truth is, we don’t because we can’t. We can not be the maintainers of our souls and minds. But we know The One who can.

And he does more than just keep you beautiful. He keeps you whole. Mind, body, and soul.

And so yes, we need maintenance. But in deeper ways than we realize. God, in his grace, power, and consideration of his children, has given the maintenance we need. An eternal maintenance of things deep within that cannot be provided by any other source:

He gives us peace.

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.

Isaiah 26:3

He gives us joy.

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:13

He gives us strength.

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.
Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you.
I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

Isaiah 41:10

He gives us hope.

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

Jeremiah 29:11

He gives us love.

See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him.

1 John 3:1

These are the ways our God maintains us. While we are trying to maintain our physical beauty, let us hold on to the One who maintains the beauty of our souls.
